Announcements

Our sincere sympathy to the family of Andrew Bullock who passed away last week. May he enjoy eternal peace.

In anticipation of the Feast of St. Blase, early Bishop and Martyr, the customary Blessing of Throats will take place at the Masses this weekend. A venerable legend associates the Saint with the restoration to health of a child choking on a fishbone. From this incident developed the practice of blessing the throats of the faithful through the intercession of St. Blase, whose actual feast day is February 3rd.

The St. Charles Borromeo Seminary Annual Appeal will be taken up next weekend, February 7th/8th. Please be as generous as possible in assisting the Seminary in preparing our future priests for Ordination. As noted on the materials mailed to your household, you may send your donation directly to the Seminary or drop your envelope in the collection basket. Please pray for an increase in vocations to the Diocesan Priesthood.

Strike up the band to salute the academic achievements of our young parishioners at Coatesville Area Catholic Elementary School, as witnessed by their recent semester report card. First Honors were awarded to Brian Hart, Rebecca Kousisis, Samantha Davis, Karen Powderly, Jennifer Urbine; Second Honors went to Michael Cabry, Lindsey Keehn, Elana Kousisis, Nicholas Ponto, David Keehn. Sincere congratulations to our hard working scholars!

Parish Volunteers, who have accepted the invitation to our Appreciation Dinner, are reminded that this event is being held at the Revere Tavern, Route 30, Paradise, this Sunday, February 1st. The social hour begins at 3:00pm, followed by the serving of dinner at 4:00pm. Come and enjoy with our gratitude!

Bishop Shanahan High School, West Chester is hosting the All-Catholic Chorus Festival later this week. This 127 voice choir, whose members were chosen from the Archdiocesan High Schools and private academies, will be presented in concert on Sunday, February 8th, at 3:00pm, in SS. Simon & Jude Church, Westtown. Tickets are $5.00 and will be available at the door prior to the concert. All are welcome to attend.

It is recommended that any student, who wishes to attend the new Bishop Shanahan High School, Downingtown in September 1998, should register during the week of February 9th-13th. Hours for registration are 10:00am until 8:00pm, Monday thru Friday, at the old Shanahan Main Office, 103 North Everhart Street, West Chester. Next year's enrollment must be established now. Also, any person interested in presently working parttime in the Shanahan Cafeteria should contact the school's cafeteria manager at 431-0959. This holds true also for positions at the new school's cafeteria in Downingtown.

Love Like a Wall of Brass

The prophet Jeremiah is called to be a fortified city and a wall of brass. The prophet Ezekiel is called to have a brow hard as diamond, and God's servant in Isaiah is one with a face like flint. How do we reconcile these tough descriptions with Paul's urging to put on love? We see the two instincts merge as Jesus proclaims God's favor but receives the crowd's fury. Love is an act of courage, not just a mushy feeling. We may not feel courageous as we join in our liturgy of love and profess our words of faith. Yet we might heed the call to gird our loins. The Christ we profess requires a love as fierce and true as a wall of brass.

"75th Anniversary" Celebration!

St. Joseph's Church will celebrate its 75th Anniversary in the Spring of 1999 and to commemorate this memorable event I have volunteered to chair a committee to plan the celebration. We need to start planning now and I need your help! If you are interested in helping plan this special event, please attend an organizational meeting on Tuesday, February 10th at 7:00pm in the School Hall. No experience is necessary. Bring your ideas and be prepared to have a good time. If you are unable to attend the meeting but would still like to help, contact Lisa Hillman at 857-1549.
