Pastor Named for Our Parish

After having served as Parochial Administrator of St. Joseph Church for the past two years and in an effort to bring to a close the interim period between the death of the last Pastor, Father Cyril Ponisciak, and the present, Father John Oulds has been appointed by His Eminence, Anthony Cardinal Bevilacqua to be the Pastor of our Parish Family. Father John continues to serve also as Pastor of nearby St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, a position which he has held for five years. This "twinning" arrangement of two parishes sharing the ministry of one priest is being employed with a greater frequency throughout the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, so as to maintain the existing parishes and redistribute the priests according to need.

Thanks to the loyalty and cooperation of parishioners of both West End Parishes, our pioneering venture at "twinning" has progressed smoothly and successfully. We can only predict that, with the help of God's grace, the same will be true in the years ahead. Father John's appointment becomes effective with a Rite of Installation for Pastors, to be conducted by our Regional Vicar, Monsignor James McDonough, at a weekend Mass yet to be selected. Kindly look for a future announcement giving more details. And keep our Parochial Administrator turned Pastor in your good prayers.

Corpus Christi Sunday

This Weekend

In keeping with the Solemnity of the Lord's Body and Blood, the former Feast of Corpus Christi, this Sunday is being observed as a Day of Eucharistic Devotion. The Blessed Sacrament will be solemnly exposed upon the altar at the conclusion of the Morning Mass. The Exposition will continue throughout the day until a Closing Service of Prayer at 4:00pm. A special feature of this Afternoon Service will be our Procession with the Blessed Sacrament in which all in the congregation will be invited to participate. Please plan to take part in some facet of our Corpus Christi Sunday, especially remembering in your prayers the need of increased vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

Jubilee Pilgrimage

The Great Jubilee of the Year 2000 opens on Christmas Eve 1999 and closes on the Epiphany of the Lord 6 January 2001. For us Christians such holy years may include pilgrimages evoking our personal journeys into the mystery of the incarnation. If we can't visit holy cities in other lands - as some Muslims journey to Mecca, Jews and Christians journey to Jersusalem or Catholic Christians to Rome, Czestochowa, Tepeyac, Canterbury or Santiago de Compostela - at least we can visit a nearby sacred place. To go on pilgrimage can be a threshold experience or a turning point as we follow the path of Jesus our Lord.

A Family Perspective

Today's readings all center on spiritual and physical nourishment. On Saturday or Sunday, we gather as a parish family around the altar to be fed. During the week, family meals are also times of nourishment and refreshment, and our dining tables are the altars of our "home churches".

75th Anniversary Photographs

Throughout the festive events of April 25th, our parishioner and professional photographer, Len Sabocsik, took numerous pictures capturing the highlights of our Parish 75th Anniversary Celebration. His handsome photographs have been arranged in two identical albums, found on a table in the rear of Church. Prints of these photographs in various sizes are available for purchase.

Over the next several weekends, you may wish to inspect the albums and take note of desirable pictures. To order, check the print sizes and prices in the front of the album and then use the red book to place your actual order, following the instructions listed therein. Len will notify you when the pictures are ready for delivery. These photographs are a wonderful way of holding on to the beautiful memories of our Parish Diamond Jubliee.

Helping a Fellow Parishioner

We need your help! The St. Joseph Parish is looking to help out one of our fellow parishioners, Joe Taran, Jr. Joe's mother recently passed away and he is in need of assistance for meals on a temporary basis. What we are trying to achieve is to have at least 25 parishioners who would take one turn a month in providing a hot meal to Joe a day. The days we need covered are Wednesdays through Sundays. You would need to deliver the meal to Joe's home which is very close to the Church.

In Christian charity, we ask you to please participate in opening your heart to Joe and showing how much his parish really cares for him.

If you can participate, please contact Andy Levenite at your earliest convenience at with the day or days of the week that you would be willing to provide Joe with a meal. She will be developing a schedule that will be circulated among the participants along with their phone numbers.

For those who can participate an organizational meeting will be held very shortly. We hope to have "Meals for Joe" start as soon as possible.

Remember one of the Corporal Works of Mercy, "To Feed the Hungry".

Thank you in advance for agreeing to be a part of this important parish activity.
